Understanding the Black Widow Spider

Widow spiders are one of only two spider groups in the United States considered medically important. Three species of black widow spiders are native to the U.S., but only two – southern and western black widows – are commonly found around structures. Adult females of both species have shiny black bodies and round abdomens with a red hourglass marking underneath. The western black widow also has a red spot at the end of the upper side of the abdomen.

Only black widow females can deliver a medically significant bite. Most bites happen when people accidentally brush against their webs in quiet, protected spots near the ground. Their venom contains a neurotoxin that causes constant muscle contraction, leading to severe pain that can last several days. Fortunately, black widow bites are rarely fatal. And unlike bites from brown recluse spiders, they don’t cause tissue death or open wounds.

Heavy black widow populations are usually linked to poor storage practices, indoors or out. They’re also common in crawlspaces. Wearing thick gloves while inspecting can help reduce the risk of a bite. Before removing webs with a web duster, treat spiders and egg sacs directly using a knockdown product like Ridesco WG or Suspend PolyZone. Then apply residual spot treatments of the same product to areas where these spiders are likely to build webs.

By understanding black widow behavior and applying proper inspection and treatment techniques, you can significantly reduce the risk these spiders pose to your customers. Count on proven solutions like Ridesco WG and Suspend PolyZone for reliable knockdown and long-lasting residual protection.
