Understanding Crabgrass

Crabgrass is one of the most common and persistent weeds in turf and landscape areas. The two most common species are large crabgrass, also called hairy crabgrass, and smooth crabgrass. The key difference is appearance: large crabgrass has hairy leaf blades and sheaths near the base, while smooth crabgrass does not and is typically smaller.

As a summer annual, crabgrass germinates in spring, grows aggressively through summer, produces large numbers of seeds, and dies in winter. Its low-growing habit allows it to survive mowing as low as half an inch and still set seed. A single plant can form many tillers that spread outward from the center, making early intervention critical.

Crabgrass is easiest to control when it is young, before crabgrass plants produce four tillers. Once crabgrass plants reach seven tillers, they become harder to remove and may require multiple herbicide applications. Seeds remain dormant until soil temperatures reach about 55°F for four to five consecutive days, making spring the ideal time for prevention.

For pre-emergent control, treat turfgrass with ProDiamine 4L or apply T/I 2.5 G in landscape beds before germination begins. If crabgrass has already emerged, apply a systemic selective post-emergent herbicide like Drive XLR8 directly to young, actively growing crabgrass. Targeting crabgrass before it produces seed delivers the best results while protecting tolerant turfgrasses.
